UC Irvine Assistant Prof. Craig Martens, a pioneering young researcher in the emerging science known as “chaos,” has won a highly competitive grant from the federal Office of Naval Research.

The Young Investigator Award provides $75,000 a year and up to $40,000 in matching funds annually for three years to young faculty members who have earned doctoral degrees. Only 15 of 316 applicants were chosen this year as scientists who show considerable promise for creative research and teaching.

Martens, who last year was the only California chemist to win a Presidential Young Investigator award, uses computer programs to study molecular interactions that mimic a variety of chemical interactions
