Spill Forces Stewards to Stop Race and Rule It No Contest
A no contest was declared in the seventh race at Canterbury Downs Thursday when a rider thrown from his horse couldn’t be removed in time to avoid being trampled.
Jarvis Hightower fell from his mount, Vent de Nord, about 20 yards into the race after being bumped by a trailing horse, track spokesman J.G. Preston said. The field was scheduled to race 1 mile 70 yards over the 1-mile track.
“Once it became clear they couldn’t get him on the stretcher in time, it became apparent they had to stop the race,” Preston said.
The track announcer, after receiving instructions from stewards, asked riders over the loudspeaker to pull up their horses. An outrider also rode onto the track to alert the jockeys.
All wagers were refunded.
Hightower was treated at a hospital for a broken rib and released, Preston said.
