From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A customer waiting in a teller line during a bank robbery is credited with helping police catch a man suspected in as many as 28 such robberies. David Jansson chased Timothy Lupe Martinez, 36, down a highway after Martinez allegedly robbed a First Interstate Bank branch of about $450 just before noon Wednesday, authorities said. Jansson jumped in his BMW and chased Martinez, flagging down a California Highway Patrol officer as he drove along Interstate 680. “I was calling 911 on my car phone but I couldn’t get through,” said Jansson, 35. He saw the CHP car, “waved him down, rolled down my window and said, ‘Hey, the guy in the silver car, he’s a bank robber,’ ” Jansson said. “All this happened at 70 m.p.h.” Minutes later, authorities cornered the rented Chevy Lumina.
