From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered emergency inspections of the reverse-thrust operation of Pratt & Whitney engines on Boeing 767 planes. The action was prompted by the crash of a 767 May 26 over Thailand, killing 223 people. Officials said there was evidence one of the crashed plane’s two engines may have gone into reverse while it was climbing. Reverse thrust is used to slow the plane on landing. The FAA said that, while an engine in the Thailand crash reversed, the reason it did and what caused the accident had not yet been determined.
