OJAI : Panel to Discuss Proposed Landfill

Share

The citizens advisory committee of the Ventura County planning division will hold a meeting today to discuss the status of the proposed Weldon Canyon landfill near Ojai.

Scott Ellison of the planning division will summarize the status of the proposal, including the process of obtaining proper permits and the draft of an environmental impact report.

Waste Management of California has proposed a landfill at the canyon site just east of California 33 with a capacity of 59.2 million cubic yards that would open in 1992 and would accept trash for the next 60 to 70 years.

But the environmental impact report recommends a landfill smaller in scope, with a capacity of 19.9 million cubic yards and a life span of about 30 years.

Environmentalists and some residents of the Ojai Valley have opposed the site, arguing that it fails to meet state environmental laws and would increase traffic and air pollution.

The landfill would replace Oxnard’s Bailard Landfill, which is scheduled to close in 1993.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Ventura County Government Center’s administration building, 800 S. Victoria Ave., in the multipurpose room.
