At It Again: John Sununu’s response to a badgering questioner crossed the line into bad taste, say several people present at the recent Washington meeting. Lawyer Harry Rosenfield, 79, stood to ask Sununu a question but stumbled and fell. He regained his feet and harpooned Sununu with a question about Dan Quayle as President. In what those present called a condescending tone, George Bush’s chief of staff retorted: “Well, if Quayle does ever ascend to the presidency, you can be sure he won’t fall out of his chair!”

High Chair: Workers readying an Ottoman palace in Istanbul, Turkey, for President Bush’s visit this month have installed a Western-style toilet, a palace official said Thursday. The grand decor of the palace is Turkish in every respect, including the Oriental-style toilets, which require the user to squat.

Knockout: Muhammad Ali came out signing, not swinging, and claimed another title. The former heavyweight boxing champion wrested his new title from baseball’s all-time home run king, Henry Aaron, in a book-signing session in Berkeley. Ali signed 1,000 copies of “Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times” by Thomas Hauser. Aaron earlier this year signed 796 copies of his autobiography at the store.

T-Shirt Rag: Chinese citizens wearing T-shirts reading “Bored” or “I’m Depressed, Leave Me Alone” might speak volumes, but they tick off Chinese authorities, who banned the clothes, saying they do nothing for China’s public image.
