Pedestrian Deaths Double This Year

Pedestrian deaths have doubled this year from the first half of 1990, police said, and nearly half the victims both years were over 50 years old.

Police have begun an “informal awareness campaign to alert the older citizens of our city of this serious problem,” police spokesman Bill Robinson said this week.

In the first half of this year, 22 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents, and nine were older than 50, Robinson said. Last year, only 11 pedestrians were killed in the same period, and five were over 50.

Police citing pedestrians for jaywalking will make an extra effort to educate the offenders, Robinson said.
