Court Postpones Order to Close Five Schools
The 2nd District State Court of Appeal on Monday postponed an order to shut down five year-round schools in the Lynwood Unified School District, ruling that the schools could continue to operate on the schedule until further notice.
The action puts on hold a lower court order to close the schools that would have taken effect Monday. It also spares the district a possible contempt citation for refusing to obey the order.
The district still faces a July 23 hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court in Compton on the legality of the year-round format.
A parents group insists that the district failed to provide legally required notice of its intent to change from a traditional calendar to year-round schooling. If the court agrees, it could order Lynwood to dismantle its year-round school calendar, which took effect July 1.
