Croatia Calls for EC-Style Yugoslavia
Croatia’s prime minister told Yugoslavia’s federal government Monday that the nation, a federation of 24 million people, should be redrawn as an alliance of independent countries similar to the European Community.
Prime Minister Josip Manolic presented his program for Yugoslavia’s future after talks with federal Prime Minister Ante Markovic. The plan calls for Yugoslav republics to observe principles of international law in their relations with each other and to respect minority rights.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the European Community arrived to monitor a truce accord brokered by the EC amid reports of fighting with federal troops that left a Croatian police officer dead and another wounded.
Milan Brezak, assistant interior minister of the breakaway republic, told a news conference that the army opened fire on Croatian forces near the villages of Kraljevcani and Dragotinci. The army, however, charged that Croatian forces started the fighting by opening fire with mortars.
