Diego’s Surfside Restaurant and Night Club has been given another two months by the City Council to solve night noise and parking problems or face losing its operating permit.

During an hour of public testimony Tuesday night, several employees of the business on Old Highway 101 just north of Via de la Valle told of their efforts to control late-night noise.

Afterward, the council voted to create a neighborhood committee consisting of residents and businessmen to oversee the bar’s progress and return with a report at the Sept. 16 meeting.

“We’re not trying to drive this business from Solana Beach,” Councilwoman Celine Olson said, “as long as we’re sure they’re going to conduct a decent operation.”

In recent months, the bar has been criticized for late-night noise and problems caused by patrons who park their cars in nearby neighborhoods, then waken residents when they start their engines late at night.

The management has agreed to clearly display its free valet parking service to attract patrons who would otherwise park on residential streets.

“If the committee tells us in September that they’ve cleaned up their act,” Olson said, “then we’ll vote to renew the permit.”
