Gang members were involved in a bat-swinging brawl at a Little League all-star game that erupted after a scuffle between two opposing team members, sheriff’s investigators said this week.

An umpire and team manager were treated at a hospital after the July 10 melee, which broke out during an evening game between the Bassett and Hacienda Heights teams at Highlander Field in Hacienda Heights. The Senior Little League players range in age from 13 to 15.

The brawl is believed to be the most violent incident in the organization’s 52-year history, said Steve Keener, spokesman for the Little League organization in Williamsport, Pa.

Investigators would not specify whether the gang members were team players or spectators, but said that they were part of a San Gabriel Valley street gang active in the area.

No arrests had been made, but officials said Wednesday morning they had at least two suspects in the fracas that resulted in head injuries to volunteer umpire Ernie Arriola and Steven Clark, manager of the Hacienda Heights team.

Arriola suffered a concussion and was released the day after the incident from Friendly Hills Regional Medical Center in La Habra, a hospital spokeswoman said. Clark was treated for a cut on his head at Whittier Hospital Medical Center and was released shortly afterwards.

The brawl began after a catcher on the Bassett team argued with the batter of the Hacienda Heights team and threw his mask at the batter, officials said. Witnesses told deputies the two men were injured as they tried to break up the ensuing fight.

Little League officials immediately suspended the Bassett Senior Little League Charter after learning of the incident.

“We are waiting to receive more information so we may review the circumstances of the incident,” said Keener, the Little League spokesman. If it is found to have instigated the brawl, the Bassett team’s charter may be revoked, he said.

Carl Magee, regional director of the Little League, said from his San Bernardino office that the incident was a pity.

“Our program is designed to teach the opposite of what has happened,” he said. “Our hope is to give them something to do that isn’t violent.”
