U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL LOS ANGELES 1991 : NOTEBOOK

It appears that the U.S. swimming team will be without world record-holders Mike Barrowman and Melvin Stewart in its last international competition before the 1992 Olympic Games.

Since their request to miss the first four days of the Pan Pacific Games training camp was denied Wednesday by a U.S. Swimming Inc. board of review, Barrowman and Stewart do not plan to swim in the Pan Pacific Games, Aug. 22-25 at Edmonton.

They will swim in the U.S. Nationals, Aug. 12-16 at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., instead.

The board denied their request to swim in both events and miss part of the camp, Aug. 12-20 in Minneapolis, on the grounds that the decision to make the camp mandatory was reached through proper channels. According to U.S. Swimming spokesman Jeff Diamond, the board did not feel it was in its place to second-guess national team director Dennis Pursley.

A final appeal, to U.S. Swimming’s executive committee, is available to Stewart and Barrowman, but Stewart said: “It would be useless at this point.”
