Summertime Keeping Itself Under Wraps This Weekend

The deep layer of clouds that kept skies overcast Thursday will hover over San Diego County through the weekend, keeping the weather on the cool side until early next week, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

The clouds will also bring a chance of morning drizzle today and Saturday.

The marine layer has remained stationary over San Diego because of a low-pressure trough extending from the Pacific Northwest to Southern California, forecaster Dan Atkin said.

Thursday, the overcast skies kept the high to 73 degrees at Lindbergh Field, three degrees below normal for this time of year. Oceanside recorded a high of only 66. Temperatures in most other areas of the county were in the 70s, the weather service said.

The record high at Lindbergh Field for July 18 is 83 degrees, recorded in 1984. The low of 56 was set in 1884.

Temperatures will remain below the norm through the weekend, with skies partly clearing each afternoon, Atkin said.

At the beaches, temperatures will range from 65 to 70, with sea breezes of 10 to 16 m.p.h. and surf at 2 to 4 feet. The ocean temperature is a relatively warm 67 degrees.

In the coastal strip, which includes the city of San Diego, temperatures will range from 68 to 74, with nighttime lows of 58 to 64.

Temperatures in the inland valleys will hover between 75 and 83, dipping to 54 to 62 at night.

Highs in the mountains will be 76 to 84, with lows of 50 to 58. The mercury in the desert will reach 104 to 112, dropping to 70 to 78 at night.
