NEWPORT BEACH : Boats of Character to Make a Splash

Share

It began in 1960 as an informal gathering with two sailors shouting from their boat to friends, urging them to come out and show off their vessels.

Now, the Character Boat Parade is an annual event that showcases more than 100 boats decorated as wildly as their commanders in the Newport Harbor.

Sunday marks the 31st annual parade with a “Newport Goes Hollywood” theme.

The flotilla, sponsored by the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce, will start at noon and wind down about 3:30 p.m. The Loose Screw, Suavest Swab, Big Toot, Grand Ancient Mariners and other awards will go to those with the best-decorated boat, costume and sound.
