A former resident of a North Hollywood halfway house, who police say vowed “to get even” after he was evicted, was arrested after police found a device that appeared to be a pipe bomb at the residence Wednesday night.

David M. Nyborg, 41, was arrested in Ventura and was being held on suspicion of possessing a destructive device, Los Angeles police said.

The device was found Wednesday about 6:15 p.m. in a storage area at the Chandler Lodge Foundation Inc., a halfway house for recovering alcoholics in the 11000 block of Chandler Boulevard, said Lt. Michael Ranshaw of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“The bomb squad responded, removed the device and safely detonated it in the Sepulveda Basin,” Ranshaw said.

About 35 residents of Chandler Lodge and others living in the surrounding area were evacuated for about four hours while police searched the building and removed the device, police said.

Nyborg once lived at the residence but was evicted, Ventura Officer Kelly Harris said. An investigation at the scene “led police to believe that Nyborg was the responsible party,” Ranshaw said.

Los Angeles police notified Ventura police, who searched a home on Dorothy Avenue in Ventura where Nyborg’s mother lived. No devices were found, but police arrested Nyborg later as he stepped off a bus in Ventura.

The device was being analyzed by the scientific investigation division of the Los Angeles Police Department to determine if it was an explosive device, Los Angeles Police Officer Sharyn Michelson said.

Nyborg was being held at Van Nuys Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.
