Israel and Peace in the Mideast

Fields shows real chutzpah in arguing that U.S. complaints about expanded Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza are merely a smoke screen and that the real impediment to peace in the region was President Bush’s and Secretary of State James Baker’s failure to press Arab nations into negotiations. The fact is that the Bush Administration found ample intransigence on both sides.

Israel’s modus operandi is to act solely in its self-interest and spurn any U.S. desires, while demanding billions of dollars in U.S. aid. But we’ve seen such Israeli-American squabbles before and once again the result is predetermined: The Israeli lobby will wield its enormous financial and political influence over Congress and Israel will get its way--and our money.
