OXNARD : Festival to Mark Closing of School

Share

The Oxnard Elementary School District will commemorate the closing of Ramona School, located in the heart of Oxnard’s La Colonia, with a festival from noon to 6 tonight.

The 52-year-old school will be replaced by Ritchen School, which is scheduled to open in August, 1992. Ramona was ordered closed a year earlier than planned because of the district’s need to cut $2.75 million from its 1991-92 budget. Ramona’s 674 students will be transferred to other schools in the district until Ritchen is completed.

Invitations to the ceremony have been sent to Assemblyman Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria), Supervisor John Flynn and members of the Oxnard City Council, Supt. Norman R. Brekke said. The festivities will include food booths, entertainment and door prizes.

“It will be a festival environment,” Brekke said, “where families of children who have gone through the school can celebrate its closing.”

Last week, the school board approved a Ramona School Disposition Advisory Committee that will provide the district with short-and long-term proposals for the disposition of the school site.

The committee will consist of 11 members, representative of the ethnic, age and socioeconomic composition of the district.

Members will be homeowners, business owners, teachers, administrators and parents.
