World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Flooding Hits New Area; Toll at 1,781

A new area of eastern China was deluged with heavy rains, and the government said the nationwide death toll from nearly two months of storms and floods had risen to 1,781. The China Daily newspaper said the most recent deaths were in Shandong province, inundated by water. The floods, which began in May, have hit 19 provinces--nearly half of China--causing $7.5 billion in economic losses.
