U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL: ORANGE COUNTY’S DAY : LOS ANGELES 1991

Attila Malek of Costa Mesa teamed with Iowa City’s Jim Butler, the top-ranked U.S. singles player, to finish with a bronze medal in men’s doubles in table tennis at Cal State Los Angeles.

Malek and Butler scored three consecutive straight-set victories to reach the semifinals, where they then won their first game, 21-17. But Sean O’Neill, a 1988 Olympian from McLean, Va., and Derek May of Augusta, Ga., came back with games of 21-16 and 21-14 to reach the gold-medal game.

Malek and Butler defeated Khoa Nguyen of Santa Clara and Barry Dattel of Metuchen, N.J., 21-18, 16-21, 21-14, for third place.

Table tennis competition continues today with mixed doubles.

Erika Von Heiland of Anaheim reached the medal quarterfinals in women’s badminton singles with an 11-5, 12-10 victory over Gina Gomez of South San Francisco.

Festival Notes

Dan Leyson of Fullerton scored two goals and Nick Baba of Laguna Niguel, Jason Likins of Corona del Mar and Greg Boyer of Laguna Beach eached scored once in the West men’s water polo team’s 12-6 victory over the East. The two teams will meet again tonight for the gold medal; that pairing had been determined before Friday’s match. Baba, Boyer and Leyson each scored twice in an earlier 10-8 West victory over the North.

Irvine’s Peter Campbell continued as the most prolific scorer in water polo, scoring five goals in the South’s 12-9 loss to the East. Despite his play and that of Fullerton’s Andrew Tinseth, who had 10 saves, the South failed to make today’s gold-medal match. . . . Laura Baker of Fullerton scored two goals in each of the two games as the West women’s water polo team managed its first two victories of the tournament, beating the North, 9-8, and the South, 4-3.

Todd Amadhi had 12 kills (with a .529 hitting percentage), three aces and a block in the North’s 3-1 men’s volleyball victory over the West. Mark Presho of Huntington Beach had 25 kills for the West. Both teams are 1-2.
