CHOPIN: Polonaise Brillante; Sonata, Opus 65. SCHUMANN: Adagio and Allegro. BARBER: Sonata, Opus 6; “With Rue My Heart Is Laden”; “Sure on This Shining Night.” Jian Wang, cello; Carol Rosenberger, piano. Delos DE 3097. In his debut recording, 22-year-old Jian Wang from China unleashes a large, lush, gorgeously steady sound that fares beautifully in the melodious material on this disc. The cellist is particularly impressive in the impassioned, neo-Romantic Barber Sonata, sustaining his lines with a big-boned intensity that reminds one of Yo-Yo Ma. Rosenberger provides sinewy support on the bass-rich Boesendorfer piano, and the whole program is vividly recorded. Look out for this kid; he should have a great career.
