Fed Ex Plane Deal Is Blow to U.S. Economy

Share

The article, “Federal Express to Purchase Up to 75 Jets from Airbus” (July 6), “in a deal worth at least an estimated $5 billion” has me shaking my head in disbelief.

Here we are, struggling with a negative balance of payments, and this American corporation feels it has to go abroad for efficient cargo planes. And all the while, two great U.S. aircraft manufacturers stand ready to fill the orders.

To add insult to injury, American and Northwest Airlines have joined the parade to Airbus. Whatever happened to “Buy American”? Since Airbus’ pricing policies are aided by government subsidies, doesn’t that constitute “dumping”? It would appear that the Japanese are not the only ones dumping on Uncle Sam.
