Tax Funds Help Sponsor Stop-Smoking Class
Helping senior citizens to quit smoking is the aim of a new health education course conducted by the Senior Care Action Network (SCAN) and the city of Long Beach Tobacco Education Program. Weekly classes are running through Aug. 13 for Long Beach residents over age 59.
“Thanks to the revenues generated by Proposition 99, SCAN received a $36,930 grant from the city of Long Beach to help local seniors quit smoking,” said SCAN worker Elizabeth Hays. Funds for the city’s grant were derived directly from cigarette taxes levied by Proposition 99.
The smoking cessation class costs $10, which is refundable to those seniors who attend all classes. Normally the cost of such a program is $75 or more. However, SCAN is underwriting most of the usual fee.
The class meets from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays at the SCAN office, 521 E. 4th St. in downtown Long Beach. For more information, call Elizabeth Hays at 435-0380.
SCAN is a 14-year-old nonprofit social service agency committed to improving the quality of life, health and independence of older people in greater Long Beach and the South Bay. The organization’s staff coordinates the services of more than 50 public and private agencies.
