A sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a Lancaster man who attempted to run over him with a stolen car, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman said Saturday.

Garlon Robinson, 29, was in stable condition Saturday at County-USC Medical Center, where he was transferred from Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center after treatment for gunshot wounds in the head and chest, Deputy Bill Linnemeyer said.

Two deputies with an arrest warrant for Robinson went to a house in the 4460 block of 3rd Street East about 3:15 p.m. Friday, Deputy George Ducoulombier said. Robinson was wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse and parole violation, Ducoulombier said.

A woman at the house told deputies that Robinson was not there. But neighbors said they saw him climb out a rear window, Ducoulombier said.

Deputies chased Robinson on foot for about a block. Robinson then stole a car parked in the 44700 block of Foxton Avenue.

“The keys were left in the car, so he just jumped in and backed up,” Ducoulombier said.

As he backed up, the open passenger door struck a deputy and knocked him to the pavement, Ducoulombier said. The deputy, whose name was not released, then fired several shots at Robinson, who did not stop the car, he said.

Robinson began to drive the car directly at the deputy, and the officer fired more rounds, striking Robinson four times in the head and upper torso, Ducoulombier said. Eight shots in all were fired by the deputy.

Robinson was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, in addition to the original warrant charges. After his release from the hospital, he will be held without bail, Ducoulombier said.
