Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Decommissioning of the never used Shoreham nuclear power plant moved closer as Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist refused to block the transfer of the plant to New York state. The plant could be turned over for dismantling as early as this summer. New York state long opposed operation of the plant on grounds there was no way to evacuate nearby residents in case of an accident. There followed a decade-long safety battle. That led to an agreement for Long Island Lighting Co. to turn Shoreham over to the state.
