California IN BRIEF : ALAMEDA : 316 Civilians Are Laid Off by Navy
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Alameda Naval Aviation Depot has announced the layoff of 316 civilians as part of nationwide reductions at six aviation depots. The depot, which narrowly escaped closure earlier this year, will cut 453 jobs from its 3,800-member civilian work force, a 12% reduction. About 137 of the positions will be cut through attrition and an early retirement program, depot spokeswoman Sherri Withrow said on Friday. All will be laid off by Sept. 30, she said.
