U.S. Trade With China
A. Doak Barnett’s column (“Hard Line on China Has Heavy Cost,” Commentary, July 16) advocating granting most-favored-nation status to China makes a compelling argument. It argues the United States should abandon its pretensions about standing for something more than profit and self-interest and base foreign policy decisions strictly on those grounds.
While I am for anything that makes this government more honest, I’d prefer that we opt to honestly forward those ideals and values that we tell our soldiers they are sent to fight for. I believe, in the long run, the United States would come out ahead if it championed human rights and self-determination and passed up the short-term gains of crawling into bed with tyrants.
