Whittier : Bids Approved to Restore Downtown Yule Lighting

Share

The Christmas season in downtown Whittier will be brighter this year thanks to a plan to restore Christmas tree lighting along Greenleaf Avenue and Philadelphia Street.

The City Council approved bids this week from the Dekra-Lite Franchise Corp. and Glenn Electric Co. to complete a $43,000 restoration and upgrading of the Christmas light show that was damaged in the Oct. 1, 1987, earthquake. The old lighting system was anchored to a number of buildings that had to be torn down.

This year, for the first time, Southern California Edison will require the city to pay for the electricity used. Officials estimate the electric bill will be approximately $2,500 for the lights, which are illuminated from Nov. 25 through Jan. 5.

The Whittier Uptown Assn. has volunteered to pay for the electrical costs and $2,500 more to put new bulbs into existing light strands.
