State Board Decides Not to Reopen Landfill

Share

The state Water Resources Control Board on Wednesday decided against reopening the controversial Azusa landfill because it would pose an “unacceptable risk” to the quality of the San Gabriel Valley water basin.

The board voted 3 to 1 against Azusa Land Reclamation Company Inc., the landfill’s operator, and dismissed its guarantees ensuring water quality using sophisticated landfill containment features. The basin is on the EPA’s Superfund cleanup list.

“The question is not if the ground water will be polluted, but merely when,” the board said. The landfill, which stopped accepting residential and commercial trash in February under a court order, has indicated it will appeal.
