Costa Mesa Man Indicted in 6 IRS Office Bombings
A federal grand jury Wednesday indicted a Costa Mesa man on charges relating to six separate bomb attacks on Internal Revenue Service facilities in three counties.
Dean Harvey Hicks, 45, who was arrested on July 11 at his Costa Mesa home, was charged in an 18-count indictment of using a destructive device against federal facilities, possession of unregistered bombs, and attempting to impair and impede the administration of IRS laws.
The indictment charged that from March, 1987, to April, 1991, Hicks was responsible for bomb attacks at several IRS offices, including the federal buildings in Laguna Niguel and West Los Angeles. He was also charged with setting bombs on power poles near various IRS offices. There were no reported injuries in any of the bombings.
Hicks is scheduled to appear for arraignment Monday before Magistrate Charles F. Eick. If convicted on all charges, Hicks faces a maximum sentence of 110 years in prison and a fine of $4.5 million.
