Schools Get $170,000 for Energy Conservation

Share

The Los Angeles school district has received a check for $170,016.40 from the Department of Water and Power for agreeing to install energy-efficient heat-pump air conditioners and heaters at 27 campuses.

“The school district used gas boilers before this and they used a lot more energy,” said DWP spokesman Jerry Freedman Habush.

“These new units use electricity,” he said. “It’s more cost-efficient. The same system used to heat the schools is used to cool them. You just turn the knob in the other direction.”

The 27 schools getting the heat pump units are on a year-round schedule. Students on this calendar are divided into four groups, with one always on vacation. Classrooms are used all summer, making the need for air conditioners a necessity.
