Resignation of Chief Gates
I think what they did to Police Chief Daryl Gates is criminal--hounding him out of office (“Gates Announces April Date for Retirement as Police Chief,” front page, July 23). The mayor and the City Council made a scapegoat out of him.
The criminals must be having a field day now that our tough-on-crime chief has been drummed out of office. City officials will doubtless hire a police chief who will be soft on crime. And our policemen will have their hands tied behind their backs.
With a liberal mayor, a liberal City Council, and now a liberal County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles won’t be fit to live in. It will drive businesses out, reduce tax revenue and increase welfare costs. And our Los Angeles Police Department will become corrupt like other big cities.
