Resignation of Chief Gates
The Christopher Commission’s recommendation for the selection and retention of the police chief is wrong and will return us to an era of police corruption by the politicians. The LAPD is an island of integrity in a sea of city political corruption. The Times exposed corruption in Mayor Tom Bradley’s office. The Times also chronicled how City Council members savaged and weakened the ethics Charter amendment while including a large pay raise for themselves before they placed it on the ballot.
Do you want these sleazy politicians manipulating your chief of police through the changes in tenure recommended by the Christopher Commission? I think not.
I recommend that we strengthen the oversight activities of the Police Commission. This can be done by amendments to the City Charter by a vote of the people.
