NATION IN BRIEF : ALABAMA : Police Chief Faces 1-Year Jail Term
Birmingham, Ala., Police Chief Arthur Deutcsh was sentenced to the maximum one year in jail for tampering with records of the arrest of Mayor Richard Arrington’s daughter. Deutcsh was also fined $2,000 for altering jail documents involved in the July, 1990, arrest of Erica Arrington, then 18. She was arrested on three misdemeanor charges after a disturbance in Birmingham’s Southside nightclub district. The charges were later dismissed. Prosecutors charged that the chief ordered subordinates to alter jail records to cover up the case. Two police officers and a jail official are awaiting trial on records-tampering charges.
