Pittsburgh Steeler guard Terry Long was distraught about an impending suspension for failing a steroids test before apparently attempting suicide, according to teammates.

Long, one of the NFL’s strongest players, was in Alleghany General Hospital under a different name two days after he reportedly tried twice to take his life.

Several teammates said Long told them that he learned Tuesday that he had failed the steroids test July 11, the day after the team reported to camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.

Not only was Long worried about the steroids test, he also worried about being beaten out by Carlton Haselrig, teammates said.
