CLIPBOARD : June Sales and Use Tax Revenues

In June, the most recent month for which information is available, Orange County cities received almost $22.8 million in sales and use tax rebates from the state. That was a 2.3% decline from the previous June. Santa Ana received the largest amount in June; Villa Park the smallest. However, it is in the percentage changes between the two Junes that the real differences among the various cities emerge.

Compared to 1990, 17 cities received less income this year; 12 received more. The largest loss was 53.3%, in Villa Park. Among the gainers, though, three cities received at least 100% more than last year, the 1,000% jump in Cypress being most notable.

Each month city and county governments and other governmental organizations receive payments from the state in anticipation of actual sales tax revenues. In the fourth month, they receive a cleanup payment--the difference between actual revenues and the amounts previously received--plus the first advance payment for the next quarter. The amounts listed here are cleanup payments for the first quarter of 1991 and the first advance payments for the second quarter.
