Obituaries : Jeanene Swaggerty; Travel Consultant

Jeanene Swaggerty, a certified travel consultant who was active in many Glendale and La Crescenta clubs, has died at a Glendale hospital. She was 65.

A longtime La Crescenta resident, Mrs. Swaggerty died Thursday of cancer, said her daughter, Julie Adlesh of Westwood.

Born in Riverdale, Iowa, she came to California in 1943. Mrs. Swaggerty worked in a travel agency in Beverly Hills before moving her business to Montrose Travel 10 years ago.

She was formerly supreme president and honorary state president of the Emblem Club, president of the Emblem Club of Glendale No. 104 and, for more than 20 years, supreme chairman of laws for the National Emblem Club. Mrs. Swaggerty was also state parliamentarian and past president of the Parliamentary Law Club of Glendale, life member of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club and a 40-year member of the Order of Eastern Star in Glendale.

Additionally, she was past president of the Rebekah Assembly of California and served as parliamentarian and a member of the board of directors for the children’s home building fund. Locally, she was past grand president of Rebekah Verdugo Lodge No. 385 and was financial secretary at the time of her death. In January, she was honored by the Rebekah Order in Sydney, Australia.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Swaggerty is survived by her husband of 48 years, Scott Swaggerty; daughter Pam Steffen of Temecula, Calif.; mother, Doris Stiver of Monte Vista, Colo.; brother, Mitch Stiver of Simi Valley; sister, Rosemary Lounsbury of Monte Vista, Colo.; and one grandson.

A memorial service is planned for 11:30 p.m. today at the Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Glendale, is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Mrs. Swaggerty’s name to the California Rebekah Assembly Children’s Home Building Fund, P.O. Box 637, Gilroy, Calif. 95020 or to the Emblem Club Supreme Scholarship Fund, in care of Ruby Butler, 4529 W. Ave. 40, Los Angeles 90065.
