HAVANA : Bring on the Athletes

Share

More than 17,000 athletes, officials and visitors from 39 countries of the Western Hemisphere are expected in Cuba for the biggest international event ever hosted by the Communist-ruled island--the 11th Pan American Games, which begin Friday and run through Aug. 18.

Cuba won the right to host them before being hit by a severe economic crisis caused by the collapse of its former socialist allies in Eastern Europe and disruptions of its trade with the Soviet Union.

But President Fidel Castro has defended the decision to go ahead, saying the 65 sports facilities Cuba built or refurbished will serve its people for years to come and that spending by foreign tourists during the games will help recoup part of the $24 million spent on preparations.
