Where’s a good detective when you need one?

This week, there’s been a good detective in Santa Paula. His name: Ben Matlock, a.k.a. Andy Griffith. Viacom Entertainment today will wrap up filming of a two-hour episode of the NBC detective show “Matlock.” The crew filmed in residential areas and in downtown Santa Paula.

Filming for another NBC show, this one a movie-of-the-week titled “Change of Heart,” concluded late last week at the Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard. Despite inclement weather, the crew managed to find some time Friday to hop on a boat and shoot a scene out on the water.

Things went pretty smoothly from the hotel’s standpoint, said General Manager Bob Dupres. He said most of his guests were pretty excited about the whole thing--that was most, not all, of them.

“Because of our proximity to L.A. and the San Fernando Valley, a lot of the people who vacation here work in the film industry,” he said. “They just want to get away from it.”

“Misery” is bringing joy to local video store operators. The film, based on a Stephen King novel, is now on video and is topping the rental lists. Here are the top five most frequently rented videos at a sampling of Ventura County outlets:

At Silver Strand Video in Oxnard: “Misery,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “GoodFellas,” “Kindergarten Cop” and “Flight of the Intruder.”
