‘Relapse’ Puts a Shroud on Hope for Sun

If you liked July, you’ll love the weather this weekend, forecasters say.

The glimmer of hope that skies would brighten this weekend was dashed Friday when the low pressure that has plagued San Diego throughout July returned, said Wilbur Shigehara, forecaster for the National Weather Service in San Diego.

The pattern of night and morning clouds with partial afternoon clearing will persist through early next week.

“I don’t see too much hope for bringing back a lot of sunshine and warming this weekend,” he said. “If we were physicians, this would be called a relapse.”

Somehow Mother Nature is stuck on this idea of a low-pressure system over Southern California, he said. The low pressure encourages a deep marine layer of clouds.

The weekend will not be a good one for sunbathers. The beaches will see a lot of coastal clouds and only a few rays of sunshine in the afternoon, he said.

To enjoy the sunshine, sun worshipers will need to go inland to the mountains and deserts, where skies will be warm and sunny, Shigehara said.

The low pressure conditions are expected to persist through next week, but there is a bright side to this, he said. The overcast will help save water by cutting down on the need for outdoor watering.
