Mater Dei’s Carter Helps U.S. Defeat Cuba in Baseball

The United States eliminated top-seeded Cuba from the World Youth Baseball Championships in Brandon, Canada, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 5-3 victory Friday.

With the United States trailing, 3-2, Cale Carter of Mater Dei hit a two-out, bases-loaded single to tie the score. Then Ryan Luzinski, son of former major leaguer Greg Luzinski, singled home two runs. Former Villa Park standout Aaron Boone had two hits.

The United States faces Brazil at 1 p.m. (PDT) today. The United States must defeat Brazil, and Canada must defeat Chinese Taipei for the United States to reach a gold medal game against Canada.
