Assessing Views of Taxes, Quality Education and Protest

Share

Your editorial “Help Students--Not the Tax Revolt” (July 31) was right on! As a teacher for 35 years, I am appalled by the selfish “me” attitude of citizens that has allowed our schools to languish.

Not only have we burdened our young people with a $3.4-trillion debt but we refuse to adequately fund our schools. This attitude is in sharp contrast to the Americans of the ‘40s and ‘50s, who felt a sense of responsibility for our society. This self-destructive attitude was appallingly clear at the recent meeting in Huntington beach, where a mob raged against a pittance of a tax.
