‘Follies’ Unrestricted: A 1966 documentary film that exposed atrocities at Massachusetts’ Bridgewater State Hospital for the mentally ill can now be shown to the public without restrictions, a Boston judge ruled. The ruling lifts a 24-year-old ban imposed on Frederick Wiseman’s “Titicut Follies” six weeks after its debut in New York. The film, which was ruled an invasion of the residents’ privacy, showed nude men in cells being mocked by guards. The depiction was so shocking that it led to reforms at the institution. The film can be shown as of Sept. 4, but the names and addresses of residents must remain confidential.
