Yuppie Story Isn’t the Whole Show

Regarding “Housing for Seniors OKd in ‘Young Area’ Over Protests” by John Schwada on July 4:

On July 3 I attended a show at City Hall. Lewis Carroll could have described it well. The Good Old Boys were in fine fettle, talking and laughing while serious citizens taking turns at the microphone were barely tolerated. Ham actor Yaroslavsky did the act for which he is known, the over-emoted “I won’t tolerate . . . “ speech which was irrelevant to the proceedings.

All of this was duly observed by a reporter who heard concerns about evading an environmental impact report, an underground lake beneath a proposed building site, traffic which reaches gridlock daily, an overloaded sewer system, zoning change and variances from the City Code which will change the character of the neighborhood, and fear of crime and dope-pushing.

From all this the reporter gleaned a story about a yuppie shopping street and the ages of the women he interviewed.
