Separating Wheat From the Oats: Almost half of all Americans don’t know that white bread is made from wheat, but they believe that oatmeal is wheat, according to a Gallup Poll. The Wheat Foods Council commissioned Gallup to learn what to do to help Americans shape their diets around new government guidelines, which urge Americans to eat more than twice as many foods from the breads and cereals category as any other category. Two-thirds of the respondents did not know that or other details of the guidelines. Only 51% identified white bread as a wheat-based food, and 48% incorrectly thought oatmeal was made from wheat.
