U.S. Leads Service Category: The United States dominated the world’s largest service companies in 1990 in a new Fortune magazine ranking. The 500 companies on the Aug. 26 issue list had $167 billion in profits, down $11 billion from the previous Global Industrial 500. The list ranked sales of companies from finance to railroads in eight categories including diversified services, commercial banking, savings banking, life insurance and utilities. Of the 25 countries represented, the United States led with 150 firms. Japan was second with 106, followed by Britain with 49 and Germany with 41.
