Government to Study Contaminated Poultry: The Agriculture Department is studying whether public concern over the safety of processed poultry is warranted, Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan said. “We are looking to determine to what degree this is a perception problem versus a real problem,” he said at a news briefing. Consumer groups and some congressmen have complained that the level of salmonella contamination has soared, partly as a result of “streamlined” government inspections.
