Burgreen Shuffles Police Management

Share

Police Chief Bob Burgreen has selected six of his seven assistant chiefs under a reorganization plan that seeks to trim the ranks of upper management. A candidate for the seventh spot turned down the job Wednesday.

Burgreen has elevated deputy chiefs Mike Rice, Ken Fortier and Cal Krosch to assistant chiefs. Assistant Chief Norm Stamper will remain in his position. Promoted Wednesday from commanders to assistant chiefs were Dave Worden and Bob Thorburn.

Chief Edward Gomez of the California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles said he had discussions with Burgreen about taking an assistant chief’s job but turned down the offer Wednesday.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I appreciate the fact that I have been considered, and I’m very flattered, but I’m staying.”

Gomez was an assistant chief for four years with the Border Division of the highway patrol, which includes all of San Diego County. He left to become chief in Los Angeles in 1988 and is in charge of 1,400 people.
