Approximately 3,250 people die from cancer every year in Orange County. That’s one out of every four deaths in the county. And studies show that one out of every five deaths in children ages 1 through 14 will be caused by cancer.

The good news, according to the American Cancer Society’s Orange County Unit, is that 50% of the major cancers are preventable and/or curable.

More than 165,000 adults in the county are reached annually through lifesaving educational programs, with more than 266,000 pieces of educational materials distributed county-wide.

The Orange County Unit also provides approximately 10,000 women with low-cost mammograms annually, and 40% of the county’s youth receive cancer education through school programs.

Each year, approximately 7,000 patients and their families receive direct assistance to help ease the impact of cancer, and more than 2,000 county patients participate in rehabilitation and support programs.

The American Cancer Society is supported through contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and the United Way. It accepts no government funding. Its expenditures include 29% for public and professional education, 27% for research and 21% for community and patient services.
