Responsibility Is Key to Privilege

Share

In his Commentary, “Indigent Care Catastrophes Product of Dysfunctional System” (July 14), Chauncey Alexander announced that “health care should be a right, not a privilege.” While a lovely sentiment, how can people be excited about donating their already less than adequate discretionary income toward financing it?

After all, who doesn’t want to help the sick, hurt or dying? The problem, of course, is who should pay? Is it right that the privileged are required to provide the under privileged their right to privilege? Should the under privileged maintain the right to continued dependency on the privileged by maintaining the right to free procreation without responsibility?

The privileged would be more likely to support indigent health care, if recipients were willing to reduce future dependency by following a required form of birth control.
