The Spoleto Spat: Nigel Redden, the embattled general manager of the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. whose resignation had been demanded by festival founder Gian Carlo Menotti in a dispute over artistic philosophy, announced Monday that he will quit next month. In a statement, Redden said he wanted to pursue other interests. Menotti had demanded the resignations of Redden and two top board officials, threatening to abandon the festival he brought to Charleston in 1977 if they stayed. His authority as artistic director was being undermined, he said.
